Ho Chi Minh City's luxury hotel scene splits fairly cleanly into two styles: restored or rebuilt colonial-era grand hotels in the historic core, and modern riverside towers with skyline and river views. Both are typically within or very close to central District 1, so location differences usually come down to street noise and view rather than distance from the sights.
Historic and colonial-style luxury
Several of the city's best-known five-star names occupy sites with genuine 20th-century history — grand lobbies, high ceilings and a sense of old Saigon glamour, often on or near Dong Khoi street and the Saigon Opera House. These properties tend to suit travellers who want atmosphere and heritage as much as amenities.
Modern riverside towers
Newer luxury properties along the Saigon River and around the Bitexco and Landmark 81 towers lean into glass-and-steel design, infinity pools and high-floor river views, generally with larger rooms and more extensive spa and dining facilities than the older hotels can offer in their original footprints.
What to expect
Even at five-star level, Saigon's luxury hotels are generally well-priced compared with equivalent properties in Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong, which is part of why the city has become a popular luxury short-break destination. Spa facilities, rooftop pools and multiple in-house restaurants are standard at this level.
