Ho Chi Minh City sits close enough to the equator that temperature stays fairly consistent year-round, generally warm to hot regardless of season. The more meaningful distinction is between the dry season and the wet season, and how much afternoon rain you're willing to plan around.
Dry season: roughly December to April
This is the most popular window for visitors, with lower humidity, little to no rain, and consistently sunny days. It's also the busiest and, at hotels, often the most expensive period, particularly around the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, when much of the country travels domestically and many local businesses close for several days — worth checking the dates for the year you're travelling, since Tet shifts on the Gregorian calendar.
Wet season: roughly May to November
Contrary to what "wet season" might suggest, this doesn't mean constant rain — it typically means a hot, sunny morning followed by a heavy but short downpour in the afternoon, often lasting under an hour, followed by clearing skies. Humidity is higher and the city is lusher and greener, and hotel prices are generally lower.
What to pack whenever you go
Light, breathable clothing year-round, a compact umbrella or rain jacket outside the driest months, comfortable closed shoes for walking on uneven pavements, and modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) for temple and palace visits.
