Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand, far closer to Cambodia's coastline than to Ho Chi Minh City, and is reached by a short domestic flight rather than a day-trip drive or boat — a useful distinction, since it's sometimes mentioned alongside genuine day-trip destinations. It's Vietnam's largest island and has developed quickly into the country's main beach resort destination.

Regular short domestic flights connect Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc International Airport, making it realistic even for a long weekend, though most visitors get more value from at least three or four days to justify the flights.
What to expect
Long white-sand beaches, a warmer, more consistently sunny climate than the mainland even in the wet season, and a resort scene that ranges from large international beach resorts to quieter, simpler guesthouses on the island's less developed south and north coasts. A cable car (one of the world's longest over-water routes) connects the mainland port area to An Thoi and Hon Thom island, with a small amusement park and water park at the far end.
Is it worth it from Saigon?
If beach time is a priority for your trip and you have at least three or four days to spare, yes — it's a meaningfully different experience from the city and one of the easiest proper beach escapes in southern Vietnam. If you only have a day or two free, the flight time likely isn't worth it; a closer option or simply more city time will serve you better.
