District 1 is Ho Chi Minh City's historic and commercial core, and for most visitors, it's the natural base. Loud, dense and constantly in motion, especially around Ben Thanh Market and the backpacker streets around Bui Vien. It calms down considerably in the leafier, more upscale streets near the Reunification Palace and along the riverside, where colonial-era buildings, embassies and five-star hotels sit under mature tree cover.

Getting around
Almost everything in District 1 is walkable, weather permitting, and it's the best-connected district for Metro Line 1, taxis and ride-hailing apps. The heat and pavement conditions mean many visitors still hop between sights by short taxi ride even when walking would technically work.
