Because District 1 covers everything from the backpacker streets around Pham Ngu Lao to the five-star riverside strip, "staying in District 1" doesn't tell you much on its own — the sub-area matters as much as the district. Here's how the main pockets differ.

Budget: around Pham Ngu Lao / Bui Vien

The backpacker district, packed with hostels, guesthouses and budget hotels alongside bars, street food and travel agencies offering onward bus and tour bookings. It's loud, especially at night, but extremely convenient and cheap, and an easy walk to Ben Thanh Market.

Mid-range: around Le Thanh Ton / Nguyen Trai

A wide band of three- and four-star hotels sits in the streets between the backpacker area and the riverside, generally offering a calmer night's sleep than Bui Vien while staying walkable to the main sights, at a noticeably lower price than the five-star riverside strip.

High-end: Dong Khoi and the riverside

Tip: If noise bothers you, ask for a room away from the street, or avoid booking directly on Bui Vien itself — the parallel and side streets are quieter but still a two-minute walk from the action.
