Ho Chi Minh City has one of Southeast Asia's largest concentrations of budget accommodation, largely centred on the Pham Ngu Lao and Bui Vien area of District 1, with a growing secondary cluster in District 3 and around Le Van Sy offering similar prices in a quieter setting.
What you get at each price point
Dorm beds in sociable, well-reviewed hostels typically come with air conditioning, lockers and a communal area or rooftop, often with a bar attached. A step up, private budget hotel rooms usually add a private bathroom, TV and sometimes a window — worth checking specifically, since some of the cheapest rooms in older buildings are windowless.
Beyond Bui Vien
If you want budget prices without the nightly noise of the backpacker strip, look slightly further out — District 3 and the quieter side streets of District 1 both have well-reviewed budget guesthouses at similar prices, usually a 10 to 15 minute walk or short ride from the main sights.
Booking tips
Prices are generally low enough that it's worth paying a little more for a place with strong recent reviews rather than chasing the absolute cheapest listing — the gap in comfort and safety between a $8 and a $15 room is often larger than the price difference suggests.
