Ho Chi Minh City is often the start or end point of a longer Vietnam itinerary rather than a standalone destination, and three cities come up again and again as the next stop: Da Nang, Nha Trang and Da Lat. Each is a short domestic flight from Tan Son Nhat Airport, and each offers a genuinely different experience.
Da Nang: beaches and Hoi An access
Da Nang combines a modern beach city with easy access to Hoi An's old town, one of Vietnam's most-loved historic destinations, roughly 30 to 45 minutes away by taxi. It's a good pick if you want beach time and heritage sightseeing in the same stop, plus the Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills as further options nearby.
Nha Trang: Vietnam's classic beach resort city
Nha Trang is a longer-established beach resort destination with a long central beach, a busy strip of hotels and restaurants, and nearby snorkelling and island-hopping boat trips. It suits travellers who want a straightforward beach break with plenty of tourist infrastructure already in place.
Da Lat: mountain air and a completely different climate
Da Lat sits at altitude in the Central Highlands and offers a genuinely cooler climate than anywhere else on this list — a welcome break if the heat and humidity of Saigon and the coast have worn you down. Expect pine forests, waterfalls, flower farms, and a noticeably French-colonial architectural character left over from its history as a hill station.
Mui Ne: the closer beach option, by road
Mui Ne, a beach town known for its red and white sand dunes, sits roughly 200km northeast of Saigon — about a 4 to 5 hour drive or bus ride rather than a flight, which makes it a realistic option if you'd rather avoid airports for a shorter beach add-on. It's a quieter, less built-up alternative to Nha Trang or Phu Quoc, popular for kitesurfing given its consistent coastal winds, though the beach itself is less postcard-perfect than Phu Quoc's.
Getting there
Da Nang, Nha Trang and Da Lat are all served by frequent short domestic flights from Tan Son Nhat Airport, generally in the range of one to two hours in the air — see our flights guide for general booking tips. Mui Ne is typically reached by road (private car, bus, or organised transfer) rather than by air. Book onward travel a little ahead of peak holiday periods (particularly Tet and major Vietnamese public holidays), when both flights and buses can sell out and prices rise.
