Thao Dien, part of what's now technically Thu Duc City but still commonly referred to by its old District 2 name, sits across the Saigon River from District 1 and has developed into one of the city's most popular neighbourhoods for long-term expat residents, particularly families, thanks to its villas, international schools and noticeably greener streets.
What it's known for
A dense concentration of brunch cafes, craft coffee roasters, yoga studios, boutique homeware stores and international restaurants, mostly clustered along Thao Dien and Xuan Thuy streets. It has a distinctly different pace and feel from central Saigon — quieter, greener, and shaped as much by its resident international community as by tourism.
Should you stay here?
For a short first visit focused on the classic sightseeing list, probably not — it adds a river crossing and taxi time to most major sights. For longer stays, or visitors who specifically want a calmer, more residential base with a strong café scene, it's a genuinely appealing option, and increasingly well served by hotels and serviced apartments.
